Clinical Unit
The Clinical Unit is registered as an ‘Independent Medical Agency’ with the Healthcare Commission. It provides on-site clinical services for all the residents of the Centre. The Clinical Unit includes consulting rooms for medical staff, dieticians, optometrist, a dental surgery, EEG facilities and a treatment room led by a nursing sister.

The Clinical Unit provides in and out patient clinical services for adults and children with epilepsy, learning difficulties and associated neurological disorders. The Clinical Unit is a single storey, wheelchair accessible building, comprising: offices, treatment area and reception areas: one for adults and one for children. All residents are addressed by their preferred title and recognised as unique with the right to individual care. This includes the right according to their understanding to appropriate information and participation in decisions about their care. Health care planning is shared with families and carers. Working as a Multi Disciplinary Team ensures that physical, psychological, social and spiritual needs are taken into account when developing an individual care plan.
All residents are registered with a local practice of General Practitioners and daily surgeries are held in the Clinic. Nurse clinicians provide a service 2 days a week. They cover all General Practitioner health needs for the centre. See G.P. Services.
The Treatment Room provides an emergency and routine service covering all health related problems. It encompasses on site training for staff. It assists GP’s with surgeries and clinics. Approximately 500 patients are treated in the treatment room per month.
Emergency provision includes:
- Emergency services and First Aid for the Centre by registered nurses. (This is a response to aid calls on centre to any emergency situation). Nurses assess, diagnose and treat as appropriate.
- Minor injuries which are assessed and treated in the treatment room.
- Wound care is managed within the treatment room (including suturing).
- Centre cover nurses are also a part of a first response team for behavioural emergencies.
Routine provision includes:
- Venepuncture and ECG’s are performed at the Doctor’s and Nurse Clinician’s requests.
- The administration if immunisations and vaccinations.
- Chronic disease monitoring which includes: weight, blood pressure, urinalsis, smoking status, mobility. BMI.
- Vagal nerve stimulator clinics, where the stimulator is checked and monitored to obtain maximum efficacy for the patient.
- Optician appointments and foot care are organised from the treatment room.
- House visits to administer insulin and to assess patients with minor ailments.
Quality is monitored by patient questionnaires, significant event analysis, essence of care and clinical audits.
The staff network with Macclesfield General Hospital and are part of tissue viability, infection control and respiratory interest groups.
The staff also participate in multi-disciplinary team house rounds and centre wide audits.

The EEG Department provides a comprehensive EEG assessment, helping to support a clinical diagnosis and classification of epilepsy. Both adults and children are seen. The department provides a service on and off site. See EEG.
Doctors & Consultants.
There are a number of full time Doctors/Psychiatrists, and one part time Consultant Physician together with visiting Consultants. See Clinical Staff.
Dental Department.
The department provides regular check ups. Treatment and emergency treatment for adults and children and training for David Lewis carers in the dental care of those with special needs is provided. See Dental Service.
Podiatry Services are provided every fortnight. See Podiatry Services.
Optical Services can be provided on and off site if necessary.
A dietician visits fortnightly for adults and children. See Dietician.
