Support Services

From the moment they arrive, College Students are surrounded by Support
Our greatest resource and the key to our success with young adults, is dedicated and caring professional staff who understand the impact that epilepsy and neurological disability can have on people’s lives and on their learning capabilities. Staff work together to provide a truly consistent and inclusive approach, which helps students to progress along their journey to independence and thus realise their full potential.

The Triangle Approach
Each individual has a tutor and a key worker. This triangle means that the student has constant involvement from both the College and the residential house. All three plot the individual learning plan for the student’s journey, they set goals and targets, keep a record of what is being achieved and together help sort out any problems and issues. It is a close and stable relationship which acts as the basis for the individual to progress during his/her life at College.

Multi-Disciplinary Team
The multi-disciplinary approach to the management and support of all students is a unique and successful feature of the College. As well as education services, the other areas of excellence are residential care, medical and clinical services and a range of therapies.

The Centre’s clinical service offers consultant neuropsychiatrists, clinical
neuropsychologists, specialist medical staff, a dedicated GP service, nurses and behavioural support advisers who all contribute to an holistic approach to the management of each individual’s health. The team jointly agree goals for clinical management.

This coordinated approach between clinicians, education and care staff is a key factor in ensuring that students gain maximum benefit from their College experience. All students have access to epilepsy management from our consultants.

Therapy Team
There is a comprehensive range of therapies which student can access – physiotherapy, speech and language, art, hydrotherapy and occupational therapy.

PHSE Team and Clinic
The personal health and social education personnel provide important counselling and advice to students. There is also a College drop-in centre with therapists and nurses where individuals can discuss matters of a personal nature and a health centre on site with a GP service and clinic with treatment room.

Social Work and Protection
We believe in person-centred care and support. The Centre’s social work team can support students by liaising with home social services to plan for transition when leaving College, by helping to find an advocate and by dealing with the protection of vulnerable people.

Behaviour Support Team
These staff have an in-depth understanding of how neurological disability can affect behaviour and they form a crucial part of a student’s support network. They work with students and staff to provide a consistent framework and environment and advise on strategies to deal with behavioural problems.

Careers Advice
All students are entitled to receive independent advice and guidance. The College has its own Connexions Adviser who is a member of our transition team to plan for students’ future. Advice is thoughtful and realistic.

Leisure Facilities
As well as participating in sports and arts, a highly popular scheme is accessing instructional workshops from local sports clubs such as Manchester United and Sales Sharks Rugby Club, and musical visits from Manchester’s renowned Halle orchestra.

Students also benefit from gym programmes, swimming and games such as badminton at a local leisure centre and a sports led collaboration with Wilmslow High School. The College Youth Club is run by a committee comprised of students.

Chaplaincy
The Centre has a chaplain who visits regularly and a chapel on site, as well as facilities for multi-faiths.
