At David Lewis everything we do is geared towards helping people with epilepsy and complex needs lead more independent lives. Our Assessment and Treatment services are no different in that respect. Our holistic, multi-disciplinary approach forms the basis of our care and takes into account assessment, risk and ultimate independence.
Medical and Therapy Support We have an onsite clinic with visiting GP cover. This ensures all urgent and non-urgent needs can be dealt with quickly and efficiently. Our nursing team support the GP service, offer 24 hour cover and support and advice to the residential teams. A minor injury clinic helps to prevent residents making un-necessary visits to A&E departments. It is also important that we work closely with our local hospitals to ensure people receive the best possible care, from admission to discharge, should there be a need to be referred or admitted. Our one page patient passports support this process and each resident has one which travels with them to and from the hospital, making sure important information is passed on efficiently.
Speech, Language and Communication Therapy Having the opportunity to communicate is important to everyone, for our residents it matters even more. Without a reason or means to communicate, residents can become frustrated, isolated and present with challenging behaviours. We recognise how important it is for people to communicate int heir preferred methos and have the opportunity to speak or sign.
David Lewis has highly experienced team of speech and language therapists who are supported by trained specialist communication support staff. In the first instance, the team will assess the level of understanding and communication skills of each resident and if needed a communication plan is created and reviewed regularly. This helps to support personal development and confidence in our residents and esnures that we are supporting people appropriately.
Psychology and Behaviour Support Services Team ( PABSS) Clinical Psychologists, Behaviour Management Advisors and Psychiatric/ LD nurses work as part of our multidisciplinary team. They undertake specialist assessments and advise on the management of a wide range of behavioural issues. Our PABSS team work with the resident to establish the root of the problem. It allows them to provide a detailed plan for the person to work towards in order to manage their behaviour. The staff team will receive a copy of the plan and help to support the person by following the strategies suggested. The team can offer general support and advice, whilst providing help to people wiht a range of emotional issues.
Transitions are a key time for any of our residents and the PABSS team support the admission or discharge process and work with people on a 1:1 or group basis.
Physiotherapy, Hydrotherapy and Occupational Therapy Team We have a highly qualified team of therapists and assistants. There role is to support the team of care staff and train them to deliver the daily programmes for residents who need input. Plans are reviewed regularly and updated with new targets. Clinics are also held in the Physio department to support people with mobility and balance difficulties.
The occupational therapy and physiotherapy teams ensure that people have the right equipment for all medical and health needs as well as daily living tasks. A weekly appliance clinic ensures that wheelchairs, splints and adapted footwear are in good order.
